In Google Workspace, you can invite a group to an event, and every member of the group can individually RSVP to it. When you add members to the group, they will automatically be invited to recurring events that the group was invited to; when you remove members from the group, they will be removed from future events. This is especially useful for e.g. a recurring team meeting, but even for one-off meetings where you want to invite a team.
Is it possible to achieve the same with Stalwart?
I tried creating a group and inviting the group to an event, but then the group is a single participant with a single RSVP status.
I also tried creating a mailing list instead of a group. Now every member receives the invite (also the creator when they are a member of the list), but they cannot RSVP to it because they are not individually invited to the original event. At least, RSVP updates are not reflected on the event in the creator’s account. The mailing list is again a single participant.
I understand that topics in this category are triaged by a bot first but a human reply will follow up. If I’d prefer a human-only reply, I’ll add the no-ai tag to my topic.
Let me read the scheduling doc fully to check for group expansion behavior.
Stalwart does not currently have an equivalent of Google Workspace’s “invite a group, each member RSVPs individually” feature. What you found matches how the scheduling engine actually works:
Calendar scheduling in Stalwart (JMAP for Calendars / CalDAV Scheduling Extensions, iTIP/iMIP) tracks participation status per individual attendee address. A group or mailing list can be added as a single ATTENDEE/CUTYPE=GROUP value, but Stalwart does not expand that group into its individual members as separate attendees, so there’s only one combined participant record and one RSVP status, exactly what you observed.
Mailing lists (recipients on the MailingList object) are just a flat list of email addresses used for message delivery, they have no concept of calendar participation, so members who receive the forwarded invite are not individually tracked as attendees on the organizer’s event and their replies aren’t correlated back to it.
“Group resources” (shared calendars/address books/file folders visible to all group members) are a separate feature and don’t affect per-attendee scheduling either.
So there’s no built-in way today to have group membership automatically expand into individual invited attendees with independent RSVP tracking, or to have future recurring instances automatically pick up membership changes. The practical workaround is to invite each member individually (or use a client that expands the group to individual attendees before sending the invite), and reissue/update the event when membership changes.
Not at the moment. A group or a mailing list is a single attendee to Stalwart, so it carries one participation status, and nothing updates recurring events when the membership changes.
The mailing list attempt fails at a specific point: every member gets the invitation, but when one of them replies, the organizer’s server looks for an attendee matching the sender, only finds the list address, and drops the reply. RFC 5546 (section 3.7.2) describes how a group member’s reply should be added as a new attendee pointing back at the group, and Stalwart doesn’t implement that.
What works today is inviting people individually. Many clients expand a contact group into separate attendees when you add it, which gives you a status per person; membership changes then have to be applied to recurring events by hand. The Google-style behaviour is a reasonable thing to want, so please post it in Feature Ideas.
